Mohamed Haykal’s career spans several business sectors including shipping, technology, and banking.
Chairman of Haykal Group, which includes Transtek Systems, maker of the Middle East’s successful package Mojodat; Majarra, publisher of print and online media in the Middle East, provider of media training, coaching, and consulting, known for Arabic business news and information portal Aliqtisadi.com. He’s the founding adviser of Riversimple, a UK company that is making the first commercial hydrogen car.
Mohamed cofounded the Arab Bank Syria in 2005; he continues to serve on the board, after having served as Deputy Chairman until 2011.
Haykal has a 40 year career in shipping and transport. Haykal founded Al-Sham Shipping Company with the Saudi Dallah Group and served as Executive Chairman for 20 years until 2014. He also served as a board member (1985-1999) of Contship B.V. Netherlads, which operated one of the world's leading shipping lines Contship Containerlines, and container terminals in La Spezia, and Gioia Tauro in Italy. A civil engineer by training, Haykal started his career in one of the largest shipping agencies in the Mediterranean basin. The agency represented some of the foremost shipping lines in the world until the early 2000s.
Haykal was a board member of the German-Arab Chamber of Commerce in Berlin (2001-2010). In 2010, he was made a Freeman of the City of London. He is a fellow of the Institute of Directors (IoD) in London. He is a Board Member of the Arab internet and Telecom Union.
