Media supporting equality in Ukraine

Media supporting equality in Ukraine

BBC Media Action, JSC "UA:PBC" (Suspilne, Public Broadcasting Company of Ukraine), National Democratic Institute (NDI)
  • 09/10/2023 @ all day
  • Online

This session focuses on the media’s role in building more equal and inclusive societies in Ukraine, including BBC Media Actions’ work with Suspilne, Ukraine’s public service broadcaster, on challenging stereotypes of gender and LGBTQI+ communities, and supporting the civic and political participation of women and LGBTQI+ communities. The work has included the production and broadcast of a short film series focusing on the invisible and diverse heroes of the war in Ukraine, including women and people from LGBTQI+ communities. The films explore the challenges, decisions and strengths these communities are demonstrating and highlight their contributions to society and the war effort, and ultimately the stories ask the audience to recognise the importance of including women and people from LGBTQI+ communities in key decision-making. The session showcases how media content can help to foster more inclusive attitudes towards marginalised communities, support social cohesion and build resilience to mis- and disinformation.
